Sand-etching (“frosting”) is an adaptable technique for applying detailed designs to glass. Because it renders portions of a design opaque, it is useful for creating a sense of privacy and intimacy in an interior space, while still providing the illumination of refracted light. From the simplest application of etching on clear glass to some of the hybrid processes pictured here (including photo-emulsion “printing,” painting, fire-polishing, and flash-removal), etching is one of the most-used processes.
